Lesson One:
"Living Up To Your Faith's Potential" (1:1-11)

I. The Foundation Of Faith (vv.1-2).

1. It is based upon God's divine calling (v.1).

2. It is enriched by our relationship with Jesus Christ (v.2).


II. The Building Blocks Of Faith (vv.3-7).

1. Believers are divinely enabled to grow in their faith (vv.3-4).

2. Believers are to diligently strive to strengthen their faith (vv.5-7).

A. moral excellence (v.5b).

B. knowledge (v.5c).

C. self-control (v.6a).

D. perseverance (v.6b).

E. godliness (v.6c).

F. brotherly kindness (v.7a).

G. love (v.7b).

III. The Validation Of Faith (vv.8-11).
1. The importance of inspecting one's fruit (vv.8-9).

2. The importance of confirming one's salvation (vv.10-11).


Lesson Two:
"To Have, Hold, And Obey" (1:12-21)

I. Having God's Word In You (vv.12-15).

1. Its important that the truth of God's Word be established in believers (vv.12-13).

2. Its important to remember biblical teachings (vv.14-15).

II. Holding On To The Eyewitness Testimonies Of God's Word (vv.16-18).
1. Christian faith isn't based upon cleverly devised stories (v.16a).

2. Christian faith is based upon the truth of who Jesus Christ is (vv.16b-18).

III. Obeying God's Prophetic Word (vv.19-21).
1. God's revelation illumines the hearts of those who are attentive (v.19).

2. We should be obedient to God's Word because it doesn't come from men, but God Himself (vv.20-21).

A. God's revelation is the source of the Scriptures (v.20).

B. God's revelation is inspired by God and not men (v.21).


Lesson Three:
"They Walk Among Us" (2:1-3)

I. The Reality Of False Teachers (v.1a).

1. False prophets existed among the nation of Israel.

2. False teachers will also exist among God's church.

II. Their Mode Of Operation (v.1b).
1. They secretly introduce false teachings and divisions into the church.

2. They deny the Master and His redemptive work.

III. Their Effects (vv.2-3a).
1. They lead others into sexual immorality (v.2a).

2. They bring discredit on the name of Christ (v.2b).

3. They exploit believers because of their greed (v.3a).

IV. Their End (vv.1c, 3b).
1. Their destruction is imminent (v.1c).

2. Their judgment has already been prepared (v.3b).


Lesson Four:
"Learning & Heeding From God's Examples" (2:4-9)

I. The Three Examples Of God's Judgment (vv.4, 5a, c, 6)

1. The fallen angels (v.4).

2. The ungodly ancient world (v.5a, c).

3. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (v.6).

II. The Two Examples Of God's Saving Grace (vv.5b, 7-8).
1. God saved Noah and his family (v.5b).

2. God saved Lot and his family (vv.7-8).

III. The Two Truths To Learn From These Examples (v.9).
1. God knows how to rescue the godly from the temptations of this world (v.9a).

2. God knows how to confine the ungodly dead until their day of judgment (v.9b).


Lesson Five:
"The Self Incriminating Behavior Of False Teachers"
(2:10-16).

I. By Their Conduct With Others (v.10-11).

1. They despise authority (v.10a).

2. They are overly convinced of their superiority and importance (v.10b).

3. They are slanderous (v.10c-11).

A. Towards people (v.10c).

B. Towards angels (vv.10d-11).

II. By Their Personal Behavior (vv.12-16).
1. They follow after their natural desires (vv.12-13).

2. They are chronic sinners (v.14).

3. They are willing to forsake God's truth for money (vv.15-16).


Lesson Six:
"Spiritual Fool's Gold" (2:17-22)

I. What Their Teaching Offers (vv.17-18).

1. Empty words (v.17).

2. Enticing words (v.18).

II. Where Their Teaching Leads You (vv.19-20).
1. To a false hope (v.19).

2. Entangled in sin (v.20).

III. Where Their Teaching Leaves You or Them (vv.21-22).
1. In worse shape than what you began (v.21).

2. Out of touch with Jesus Christ (v.22).


Lesson Seven:
"Ginkgo Biblioba" (3:1-9)

I. The Importance Of Taking It Daily (vv.1-3).

1. It stirs up our memories (v.1).

2. It helps us to remember God's Word (v.2).

3. It aids in our discernment towards teachers and their teachings (v.3).

II. It Prevents Memory Loss (vv.4-7).
1. Like those who deny God's promises (v.4).

2. Like those who forget God's past actions (vv.5-6).

3. Like those who ignore God's other promises (v.7).

III. It Aids In Our Understanding Of God's Motives (vv.8-9).
1. It helps us to understand the timelessness of God (v.8).

2. It helps us to understand the patience of God (v.9).


Lesson Eight:
"The Coming Day Of The Lord" (3:10-13)

I. The Day Of The Lord (v.10).

1. The definition of it (v.10a).

2. The certainty of its coming (v.10b).

3. The suddenness of its coming (v.10c).

4. The completeness of its coming (v.10d).

II. Its Influence On The Believer's Life (vv.11-12).
1. Living a holy and godly life (v.11).

2. Living with an expectant attitude (v.12).

III. Its Ultimate Purpose (v.13).
1. The fulfillment of God's promise (v.13a).

2. The restoration of righteousness (v.13b).


Lesson Nine:
"Living In The Shadow Of The Coming Day Of The Lord"
(3:14-18)

I. Be Diligent To Live A Godly Life (v.14).

1. Live in peace with one another (v.14a).

2. Live a life that is morally clean (v.14b).

II. Be On Guard Against False Teachers (vv.15-17).
1. Be patient while waiting for the fulfillment of God's plan (v.15).

2. Know that false teachers will distort God's Word (v.16).

3. Guard against false teachers and their teachings (v.17).

III. Be Growing In Your Faith (v.18).
1. Continue to grow in God's grace (v.18a).

2. Continue to grow in your understanding of God's Word (v.18b).

3. Continue to give God the glory forever (v.18c).
