I. The Issue Of Government's Purpose.
1.
Government is ordained by God (Rom.13:1-2; Prov.8:15; Psa.22:28).
2. Government is ordained for a purpose.
A. To speak out for the
innocent (Prov.31:8).
B. To defend the poor and oppressed
(Isa.10:1-2, Psa.10:2).
C. To punish evil doers (Rom.13:3-5;
1Pet.2:14b).
D. To promote godly principles (Prov.14:34; 29:2).
E. To work for the highest good of all people (Prov.3:27; Gal.6:10).
Application - Vote for those candidates or parties who best represent God's
purpose for government.
II. The Issue Of Leadership's Character.
1.
Choose those who have the ability to lead.
A. Those who are able and
wise – who have the skills needed (Ex.18:21a; Deut.1:13a; Psa.101:2).
B. Those who are understanding – who have discernment and insight
(Deut.1:13b).
C. Those who are knowledgeable – who have the
experience (Deut.1:13c).
2. Choose those who have godly character.
A. Those who are God
fearing – they stand in reverential awe of God (Ex.18:21b; Psa.111:10;
Prov.1:7; 8:13; 16:6b).
B. Those who are trustworthy (Ex.18:21c;
Prov.12:19; James 5:12b).
C. Those who detest dishonest gain
(Ex.18:21d; Hab.2:9; Mark 7:20-23; Luke 12:15; Heb.13:5).
D. Those
who will not compromise their integrity with the Lord (Psa.101:1-8).
Application - Vote for those candidates or parties who best exhibit godly
character.
III. The Issue Of Being A Good Citizen.
1.
Through our prayers for and respect of our government leaders (1Tim.2:1-3).
2. Through our obedience.
A. By paying your taxes (Matt.22:21;
Rom.13:5-7)
B. By obeying the laws of the land (Rom.13:1-2;
1Pet.2:13-15; Titus 3:1).
- The exception to
this rule is when government violates God's directives (Acts 4:19-20; 5:29).
3. Through our involvement in the selection process.
A. Although God ordains leaders, He also expects us to be directly involved in
this process, ". . .you shall surely set. . ." (Deut.17:14-15a).
B. The best way that every good citizen can be involved
in this process today is to vote ("choose") for those who best represent
God on the issues (Deut.1:13a).
Application - Vote! Get involved, and stay involved – it is your duty as
a Christian! Issues matter to God, and they should matter to His people
too!
