GOD IS TOO MUCH!

Psalm 113

Introduction:  Words are empty.  But we cannot try to understand principles and truths without them.  But they seem trivial when trying to talk about the Lord.  Why?  It is because God is too much.  Our finite or limited minds can not entirely comprehend our infinite God. The gospel song "The Love of God" has as its last verse these words: “Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made: Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade; To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry; Nor could the scroll contain the whole, tho' stretched from sky to sky.”

These words even though they are so beautiful put, don't adequately talk about the Lord.  (By the way those words were found on the walls of a mental institution.)  To properly sum up about all the things about the Lord, this statement applies: GOD IS TOO MUCH.

When talking about the Lord, you really do your sentence an injustice when you try to end the sentence with a period when a comma should be used.  For example: Christ loves me, keeps me, helps me, intercedes for me, etc.

As I do when I do a message from the book of Psalms, I read what Spurgeon has written on the subject.  I want to give you a short portion of his introduction to this Psalm.  “This Psalm is one of pure praise, and contains but little which requires exposition; a warm heart full of admiring adoration of the Most High will best of all comprehend this sacred hymn. Its subject is the greatness and superior goodness of the God of Israel, as exhibited in lifting up the needy from their low estate. It may fitly be sung by the church during a period of revival after it has long been reprove and brought low.  With this Psalm begins the Hallelujah of the Jews, which was sung at their solemn feasts: we will therefore call it THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE HALLELUJAH. Dr. Edersheim tells us that the Talmud dwells upon the peculiar suitableness of the Hallelujah to the Passover, "since it not only recorded the goodness of God towards Israel, but especially their deliverance from Egypt, and therefore appropriately opened with Praise ye Jehovah, ye servants of Jehovah, —and no longer servants of Pharaoh." Its references to the poor in the dust and the needy upon the dunghill are all in keeping with Israel in Egypt, and so also is the reference to the birth of numerous children where they were least expected.”

When this Psalm was read to the people, it was done this way.  I will only do the first verse.

The Priest: Praise ye the Lord

The People: Hallelujah

The Priest: Praise, O ye servants of the LORD

The People: Hallelujah

The Priest: praise the name of the LORD

The People: Hallelujah

Can you imagine a service where the Lord is lifted up like this?  It is hard to fight a responsive reading like this.  This tradition was handed down for generations to be done for the Passover.

So today in my very limited, limited way and words, I want to try to tell why God is too much.  This message should be one of cheer to the heart when we come to the reality that God is too much.

I.  GOD IS TOO MUCH BECAUSE HE IS INEXHAUSTIBLE.

                                                Psalm 90:2

                  A. His power is inexhaustible. Ephesians 3:7,20

                  B. His protection is inexhaustible. Psalm 91:1-10

                        1. Protect us during sin with a way to escape before it becomes inescapable.

                  C. His Promises are inexhaustible. Psalm 77:8

“Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?”

                        3. His promises are treasures.  They can be stored up or used when needed the most.

                  D. His propitiation is inexhaustible. Romans 3:25

                                                1st John 2:2

Because of the time limitations, I can only make a few comments about propitiation.

                        2. The depth of propitiation Hebrews 7:25

                        3. The delight of propitiation John 14:2,3

                        4. The debt of propitiation Romans 1:14,15

II.  GOD IS TOO MUCH BECAUSE HE IS INCOMPARABLE.

                                                2nd Samuel 7:22

  1. No one can compare with His love.

                  C. No one can compare with His likeness.

                        1. No one or nothing is holy like He is.

                        2. No one or nothing is honorable like He is.

                        3. No one or nothing is holding me like He is.

III. GOD IS TOO MUCH BECAUSE HE IS INDESTRUCTIBLE.

                                                John 20:19a

There were five lies Satan told the disciples in that room.

                  A. He told them that he had encircled Christ's personage.

                        1. He reminded them of the death that Christ had died.  (They may be next.)

                  B. He told them that he had erased Christ's performance.

                        1. This was in regards to all those who were diseased and He had healed.

All this seemed to be in vain on this day.  The Devil was telling them this lie also. C. He told them that he had eradicated Christ's peace.

                        2. You can know this peace that only Jesus gives.

                  D. He told them that he had embarrassed Christ's people.

                        1. They had given Christ their lives.

                        2. They had given Christ their love.

                        3. They had given Christ their labors.

                        But now He was dead.

                                                John 20:19b

“came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, PEACE BE UNTO YOU.”

                  Chorus

                  When Jesus comes, the tempter's power is broken;

When Jesus comes, the tears are wiped away,

He takes the gloom and fills the life with glory,

For all is changed when Jesus comes to stay.

IV. GOD IS TOO MUCH BECAUSE HE IS INDESCRIBABLE.

                                                Psalm 40:5

                  B. Greatest can describe a sport champion but it does not adequately describe the Lord's     wooing.

                  C. Good can describe a cake but it does not adequately describe the Lord's wisdom.

                  D. Glorious can describe a song but it does not describe the Lord's Word.

                  E. Gentle can describe a mother's touch but does not adequately describe the Lord's ways.

Conclusion: God is too much.  But He is still reachable.  He is only a prayer away.  If you are not saved, the prayer that the Lord wants to hear from you is God, be merciful to me a sinner.  The Lord isn't too busy to save even today.

                                                Isaiah 55:6

“Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.”

If you are saved, then you need to worship this inexhaustible, incomparable, indestructible, and indescribable God.  I know He is too much to completely understand him but the journey is sweet and joyous.  We need to take the time to worship His majesty, marvels, might and mercy.
