Sermons I Have Preached at Riverview Baptist

Against Human Judgments

Jesus did not come to erase or redefine that which God called sinful. Jesus came to be the Perfect High Priest to His people. Jesus came to be the “Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29, 36). Jesus did not come to stand against God and His Law, but to show us how to practically live for righteousness sake, as lights in the midst of this current darkness…. Continue reading

The Priority Of Prayer

Matthew 6:31-33 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek (zētéō) ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Our “seeking” should be driven toward the Kingdom of God. If you “seek {zētéō} first the Kingdom of God AND His righteousness THEN all these other things (what you need to eat, drink, and wear) will be added to you. Continue reading

Names Of God: Yahweh Nissi

Everyone has a duty to do. Moses was to hold up the “rod of God”. This was the same “rod” that Moses held over the Red Sea when it parted. This was the same “rod” that Moses struck the rock with a Rephidim. God has had Moses use this same “rod” over and over again. But now God is going to show Israel something very different. Red Letters #13: Against Anxiety

What comes into your mind through the eyes and the ears influences your thought processes. If the devil cannot keep you from Christ and keep you in a lost state, then the devil will do his best to make you act like the lost. He wants you wandering and confused, worried and anxious, chasing every dandelion seed and useless thought. Peter told us that:… Continue reading

Red Letters Series #12: Where Is Your Heart?

Salvation is by faith in Christ. Once we come to Christ we are commanded to do good works – works like fasting and giving – to be more like Christ our Savior. We are justified by faith apart from the works of the Law (Romans 3:28) but once saved, we do the things that are pleasing to our Lord. We are saved not because of our works, but because of God’s purpose and grace (2 Timothy 1:8-10). Listen to me, Beloved…. Continue reading

The Names of God: Yahweh Elohiym and Yahweh Rapha

The Book of Exodus shows us the beginning of God’s fulfillment of His Promise to Abraham. In it we see the beginning of Israel as a nation, a people saved by God. In Israel we also see how God reveals Himself to his people. God reveals Himself through the use of different names, names that characterize Who our God is…. Continue reading

Red Letters Series #11: Light Lifts Up

Who are you living your life for? I was watching a television show last night when one of the female actors came out with “I’m non-binary. I’m not a female. I’m not a male. I don’t know what I am”. When we live our lives consumed with ourselves, living to satisfy our feelings and our wants, in time we come to a place where we are absolutely lost. This is what happens when we deny the God Who made us. Paul described the life bereft of God this way… Continue reading

Red Letters Series #10: The Mark Of Perfection Is Doing Love

God expected this type of love from His followers in the Old Testament, and expects it of us even today. DO LOVE. Love God with all you have, both emotionally and practically. And DO GOOD to those who do bad to you. Remember our Lord’s example. Imitate Jesus. Imitate God your Father, if He is indeed your Father. DO GOOD. Continue reading

The Names of God: El Shaddai

Our text today is not the first time YaHWeH came to Abram. Our God came to Abram while he was in Ur of the Chaldees. The name Abram means “exalted father”. When he was born his father Terah (whose name means “to breathe”) looked at Abram and had high hopes for him. He thought that Abram would – as mamma used to say – “do his family proud”, make a name for himself. He would have a large family, and he would be well honored as the father of a mighty clan. Overcoming Darkness

In the Old Testament YaHWeH (the Great I AM) commanded His people be light and unity in the midst of a dark and lost world. Jesus preaches on the mountain He reminds His Church that we are to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). Light cannot be darkness. Jesus said: Continue reading
