The Old Covenant believer walked according to external laws that he had to obey. The laws – ceremonial, sacrificial, and moral – were often not explained. The Old Covenant believer was told:

“I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children can live” (Deuteronomy 30:15-20)

The Law of Moses was external to the believer. It specified what you must do or not do, but provided no ability to do it. It was based on absolute free will – and was flawed because of this.
