God Gives The Increase

Preached at Riverview the evening of January 1 2017

plant1 Corinthians 3:5-7 (KJV) Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? [6] I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

Many years ago some men on a leaky old ship were in the middle of a rough and stormy sea. One of them asked the Captain “Are we safe”? The Captain replied, “The boilers are weak and may explode at any minute. The ship is constantly taking on water. To be honest with you, we may go up, or we may go down, but at any rate we’re going on!”

Those are not encouraging words, but they tell us a truth. If your faith is in man or the things that man does then your faith is in a leaky ship. I grew up listening not to Country Music but to Rock Music. The Beatles – a wildly popular group – made a remark in March of 1966 that:

Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that; I’m right and I’ll be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now”

Just four years later the group broke up, never to be again. On December 8, 1980 the Beatle John Lennon – the one who made the remark – was shot to death by Mark David Chapman. But Christ and Christianity marches on. Our Lord’s Kingdom has not diminished in power or in eternality.

What will make our Church stand strong until the Coming of the Lord Jesus? We must be ever vigilant to follow the leading of God’s Spirit and God’s Word. In Chapter 2 of this Book of Books we saw the necessity of following the Holy Spirit of God. When we stay in God’s Word and let His Spirit lead us, the Apostle said,

1 Corinthians 2:16 (KJV) …. we have the mind of Christ.

Now in Chapter Three the Apostle chastises the Church at Corinth. Paul doesn’t say that the Corinthians are not saved, but that they have stayed at a state of babyhood. When a baby is born that baby needs to be fed, needs to be changed, needs to be lovingly disciplined. Babies do not understand congregational meetings, and so often impose themselves on everyone around. The parent must deal with this, as babies are in the flesh, willful, all about themselves. It is the same way when a person is first born again into the Kingdom of God. That young Christian needs to be taught that the world is no longer about YOU. That young baby needs to understand that the Christian way of life is to Imitate Christ. To not elevate yourself, but to love others as you would be loved. The Bible says:

Philippians 2:3-5 (KJV) Let NOTHING be done through strife or vainglory; but in LOWLINESS OF MIND LET EACH ESTEEM OTHER BETTER THAN THEMSELVES. [4] Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. [5] Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

The Mind of Christ is the humble mind, the sacrificial mind,
the mind that lowers self and elevates others.

The Apostle told the Corinthians:

1 Corinthians 3:1-2 (KJV) And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. [2] I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

The Corinthians were not SPIRITUAL or SPIRIT DRIVEN people. The Holy Spirit was given, but they still relied on the flesh. Founded by the Apostle Paul this Church should have been THRIVING where it was. The people of the Kingdom should have been understanding the DEEPER THINGS of Christ, making an impact on their community. Instead the Church was a picture of what a Church should not be. The Apostle said:

1 Corinthians 3:3 (KJV) For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

They are not SPIRITUAL but CARNAL. What are the marks of the carnal? The Apostle lists four marks of the carnal believer:

  • Envying (Greek ζῆλος zēlos) which refers to passion for the things of others. This is a violation of the Tenth Commandment which states:Exodus 20:17 (NKJV) You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.

No child is the same, and no parent gives every child the same thing. God loves you, and has given you what is best for you. The world clamors for STUFF, but the Child of God knows that – like it was with the Levite of old – the Lord is our portion.

Lamentations 3:24 (NKJV) The Lord is my portion, says my soul, Therefore I hope in Him!

Psalm 16:5 (NKJV) O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot.

Psalm 73:26 (NKJV) My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

  • Strife (Greek ἔρις eris) which means “to fight or quarrel”. Strife always follows envy. Two babies playing in the sandbox see a toy they both want, and both grab for it at the same time. In a few moments the physically stronger toddler gets control of the toy and hits their playmate over the head. Momma comes, and all lose the sandbox. No one wins. This is strife.Where strife is, the flesh is at work. One of the seven deadly sins is strife.

Proverbs 6:16, 19 ESV (the Lord hates) …. the one who sows discord among brothers.

Proverbs 16:28 ESV A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.

Galatians 5:19-21 ESV Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, STRIFE, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  • Following envy and strife comes DIVISIONS (Greek διχοστασία dichostasia) which means “a breaking apart”. The Church is to be One Body in Christ, with every member in that Body working toward a common goal of glorifying God. The Body is called to be One in Christ.Ephesians 4:1-6 (KJV) I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, [2] With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; [3] Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. [4] There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; [5] One Lord, one faith, one baptism, [6] One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
  • And walk as men”. Saved by Grace by Christ we are not to walk as the lost walk, but to walk as Children of God. The lost behave the way they do because they are lost. There is no reason for a Christ follower to follow the darkness. We are toEphesians 5:8 (NKJV) For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

The Church at Corinth was not walking as the Body of Christ but was broken up into pieces. The Apostle said:

1 Corinthians 3:4 (KJV) For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

It would have been easy for Paul to be drawn into this controversy, for who doesn’t like a little praise, a little bragging on oneself? We all love a little applause, and in his flesh Paul is no different. But Paul learned a lesson that every one of us need to know.

The Flesh Does Not Give Increase. God Gives The Increase.

1 Corinthians 3:5 (KJV) Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

Both Paul and Apollos were gifted men, but their gifts did not come from themselves but from the Lord. “Even as the Lord gave to every man”. Whatever gifts we have, whatever abilities we possess, we do not have them because we are special. We have our gifts because God bestowed them. Paul planted the Church at Corinth by preaching God’s Gospel. God gave Paul the Gospel, the hands and feet, the lungs, everything that he needed to plant the Church. Nothing that was done at Corinth was because Paul was better than anyone else. Paul was a conduit by which God blessed others. Apollos was a great preacher, a gifted speaker. When Apollos started preaching the Bible says:

Acts 18:24-26 (NKJV) Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

Apollos knew about the COMING Messiah – mwhich the Baptism of John emphasized – but did not know that Christ had come. Priscilla and Aquila – two great Christ Followers – took Apollos to the side and explained that Jesus HAD COME. Hearing the truth the Bible says that Apollos ..

Acts 18:28 (NKJV) … (Apollos) vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.

If Priscilla and Aquila hadn’t taken Apollos to the side he would have kept preaching John’s Baptism and the Coming Christ. But Priscilla and Aquila did what God bid them do. Do they receive glory for this? No, but God does. And Apollos, gifted by God to preach, do we commend him? No, we commend God. The Lord gives to every person.

Who is Paul? Who is Apollos, but ministered by whom ye believed. Neither Paul nor Apollos are honored guests seated at the table. They don’t own the house of God. They are table waiters, servants, just as you and I are. They are conduits by which the blessings of God are delivered. The copper piping in the house cannot take credit for the water delivered to its occupants. If the pipes are not attached to the water source the copper tubes are useless.

1 Corinthians 3:6 (KJV) I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

Paul planted, but he did not create the seed nor till the soil. He planted the Gospel given to him by God. He went where God told him to go. He spread the Gospel seed on good ground and bad, on thorny ground and rocky soil. He broadcast the seed of the Cross of Christ where ever he could. But all Paul did was PLANT. Apollos came along, and he had the ministry of WATERING. Paul planted, but Apollos watered. Apollos watered where ever he could, and when ever he could. He trusted God just as Paul trusted God, and did as God told hi to do.

But God gave the increase.

If Paul had no planted, and Apollos had not watered, there would have been no increase. If Paul and Apollos had acted like the Corinthians there would have been no Church in this pagan city. The Apostle Paul told Timothy:

2 Timothy 4:2-5 (KJV) Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. [3] For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; [4] And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. [5] But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

Focus on the gift that God has given you. Do what God has called you to do. In time, God will give the increase. We are told:

Galatians 6:7-10 (NKJV) Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Four thousand Churches close their doors every year in America. Why? I suspect it is because the members of the Church turn away from the Way of the Cross. The Gospel is not preached, and the people do not “take up their Cross and follow Christ”. The Gospel and God’s Word must be the good seed that we sow.

When the Gospel is sown in word and deed, God gives the increase.
When we sow pseudo seed and neglect the Word of God there is no increase.
God will not bless a false seed planted.

The Apostle Paul sowed the seed of the Gospel, and Apollos watered the seed that was sown by Paul. If Paul had sown the wrong seed no amount of watering would have brought increase. If Apollos watered the weeds and not the seeds no amount of planting would have brought an increase. Both Paul and Apollos, two different people with different callings, had to work together for the glory of God.

Pride Brings Disease Into The Garden Of God

1 Corinthians 3:7 (KJV) So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

One of the greatest blessings to the Church of God is a five letter word called G-R-A-C-E. One of the greatest dangers to the Church of God isa five letter word called P-R-I-D-E. Under GRACE a person recognizes themselves as a great sinner in need of a Great Savior. Under PRIDE a person sees themselves not in need of God, but in need of a mirror so they can worship their God.

The Apostle Paul said “neither is he that planteth anything”. Do you know the best thing you can do every day? When you wake up in the morning and are brushing your teeth, spit, rinse, look up at your reflection and say:

I am nothing, but God is everything.
Only God can give the increase.

This is how Paul became successful in his life. He didn’t buy into what the devil whispered into his ear. God loves you, but the Bible tells us that success in the Church and in life begins with HUMILITY before God. The Apostle Peter said:

1 Peter 5:5-11 (NKJV) Likewise you younger people, SUBMIT yourselves to your elders. Yes, ALL OF YOU BE SUBMISSIVE TO ONE ANOTHER, AND BE CLOTHED WITH HUMILITY, for ‘God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.’ Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

The Church of God magnifies God, not itself. We humble ourselves realizing that God gives the increase. The Word of God is:

Psalm 127:1 (NKJV) Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.

And

Zechariah 4:6 (NKJV) … ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.

It is God Who gives the increase. So we follow our Savior, and look to His Cross. We trust His Blood to save us. We preach His Gospel, and live submitted to His Kingdom. We reject pride and selfishness, knowing these are works of the flesh that destroy us.

And we remember that everyone will give an account unto the Lord. The Apostle said – and I’ll close with this:

1 Corinthians 3:8-9 (KJV) Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. [9] For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

There should be no conflict between the members of the Church. Some plant. Some water. Some teach. Some sing. Some lead children, others young people. Together we are to glorify God and be as one. We are laborers together with God. God sees what you do, how you do it, and the intent of your heart. And every person shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. There is a Judgement Seat of Christ and a Judgment Seat of the Damned. Every person will stand before God, and be rewarded according to their works.

Which seat shall you stand before?

I hope you will stand with the righteous and the Blood bought at Christ’s Seat. I pray that you have received Him as Lord and Savior! May God touch your hearts with His Word.

Look, The Messiah!

Preached January 1 2017 at Riverview, Columbia, TN.

simLuke 2:21-35 (KJV)  And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.  [22]  And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;  [23]  (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)  [24]  And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.  [25]  And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.  [26]  And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.  [27]  And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,  [28]  Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,  [29]  Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:  [30]  For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,  [31]  Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;  [32]  A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.  [33]  And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him.  [34]  And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;  [35]  (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Christmas is over, and the birthday of Christ slowly passes from memory. So many people will reset their internal clocks and we’ll wait until next year when we sing Christmas hymns and carols. The story of Christ has been told, of His birth, of that miraculous night.

Christ Must Fulfill The Law To Be Messiah

Eight days after the birth of Christ the story continues two very necessary things in the life of Christ. The Bible tells us that Jesus fulfilled the Law of God perfectly. Jesus told us that He came to fulfill the Law. He said:

Matthew 5:17-18 (KJV)   Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.   [18]   For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

It was not enough that Jesus be born of a virgin, incarnate and sinless into this world. When Christ came He would fulfill the Law perfectly. He would in no way be a sinner, for no sinner (no matter how sincere) can pay for the sins of other sinners! Christ came to fulfill the Law. He lived a pure and sinless life. Though the Pharisees and Sadducees sought to find sin in Him they had to manufacture charges and hire liars to besmirch His character. Jesus was sinless. The Bible declares that Jesus is the High Priest Who …

Hebrews 4:15 (ESV) … who in every respect has been tempted as we are, YET WITHOUT SIN.

Jesus is the Lamb of God without either spot or blemish. The Scripture declares that God the Father …

2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV) … For our sake he made him to be sin WHO KNEW NO SIN, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1 John 3:5 (ESV) You know that {Jesus} appeared in order to take away sins, and IN HIM THERE IS NO SIN.

Jesus Christ was born of the virgin through the operation of God the Holy Spirit. The Angel told Joseph “that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20). He was born sinless. But what happens next is not to be ignored. It is not unimportant. Born sinless, Jesus was also initially helpless.

If Joseph and Mary dd not keep the Law and do as the
Law commanded everything would be lost!

Christ became flesh and dwelt among us. He came unto His own (John 1:11). Jesus came first for those

Galatians 4:4-5 (KJV)  But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,  [5]  To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Here then is the Christmas Story, part 2. We read:

Luke 2:21 (KJV)  And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Two very important things happened here. When God made His promise to Abraham -long before there was a written Law of Moses or for that matter an Israel – God told Abraham that every male of the covenant had to be circumcised. God told Abraham …

Genesis 17:10-13 (KJV)  This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.  [11]  And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.  [12]  And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.  [13]  He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

What if someone DIDN’T want to be circumcised? God said in Genesis 17:14 (KJV)  And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

For Jesus to be the Savior of His people He would have to be circumcised on the eighth day according to God’s Law. If He was not circumcised He would have been cut off from His people whether He was Messiah or not. The Jewish people both circumcised and named their children at the same time. When Jesus was circumcised He was named “Jesus” which literally means “God our Savior”.

Can you imagine being named “God our Savior”? Yet this name was appropriate for Jesus, for He is Emmanuel, God with us (Matthew 1:23).

What else had to happen in the life of the Baby Jesus? We are told:

Luke 2:22-23 (KJV) And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;  [23]  (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

The Law of God required two things of Mary and Joseph. First, when a woman gave birth to a male child she was to be considered “unclean” for 40 days. God told Moses …

Leviticus 12:2-4 (NKJV) “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a woman has conceived, and borne a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of her customary impurity she shall be unclean. 3 And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. 4 She shall then continue in the blood of her purification thirty-three days. She shall not touch any hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary until the days of her purification are fulfilled.

Following the time of purification the firstborn male was consecrated to God at the Temple (see Exodus 13). Pharaoh wanted the midwives to kill all the firstborn males, but God demanded that the firstborn males be consecrated. Following her time of purification Mary and Joseph had to travel the six miles from Bethlehem to Jerusalem. When you made an offering to God you gave according to what you could afford. The well off offered a lamb without spot or blemish. But the poor offered two pigeons or turtledoves. Do you see what was offered for Jesus?

Luke 2:24 (KJV) And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

Loving God Means To HEAR And DO What He Says

He was born into this world of poor parents, hard working blue collar people. Yet they kept the Law and honored their Creator to the best of their abilities and sustenance. I think this is why the Lord God chose Mary and Joseph to be the parent and protector for the Messiah.

Mary and Joseph loved the Lord,
So they kept God’s Law

If Christ had been born to a so called “Nominal Christian” or a “Cultural Christian” those people would have ignored the Law of God and so tainted Christ. Christ might or might not have been circumcised. The offering for the firstborn might or might not have been given. The Lord says:

John 14:23 (NLT) “All who love me will do what I say…”

and in 1 John 5:3 (NLT) … Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.

Those who love God HEAR God and DO what God says. Mary and Joseph HEARD God. They DID what God said. They did not DEBATE, but spent their time DOING His Will … and so were blessed. Obedience is the hinges that the door of blessing hangs upon.

The day that Jesus was dedicated in the Temple the Priest did not know who He was. The others in the Temple that day passed by the Messiah, thinking this was nothing more than a newborn baby. But our text tells us there are two others – one man and one woman – who find the Baby Messiah.

Simeon Loved The Lord And Was Blessed

Luke 2:25-26 (KJV)  And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.  [26]  And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

Here we see one of the BEHOLDS of Scripture. Behold Simeon! The name “Simeon” means “He who hears and obeys”. Simeon was not a Nominal or Cultural believer. We are told that Simeon is JUST and DEVOUT. That doesn’t mean that he was part of the holier than thou party, the Pharisees or Sadducees. The Bible tells us even in the Old Testament that:

Habakkuk 2:4 (KJV)  Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

A truth that the Apostle Paul echoed in the New Testament as he wrote:

Galatians 3:11-12 (KJV)  But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.  [12]  And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

Simeon loved God and heard God and did what God told him to do. He trusted God. His faith was in God his Savior. Simeon was DEVOUT, DEVOTED TO GOD. He wasn’t self righteous, but looked to God for his salvation. Simeon loved the Lord, and the Lord loved him. What was Simeon doing in the Temple? He was:

waiting for the consolation of Israel

Do you see that word “consolation”? This is the Greek παράκλησις paraklēsis, which means “Someone who calls alongside so as to comfort or embrace”. The Messiah was coming, and Simeon was looking for Him. It was revealed to Simeon that he would not see death before he had seen the Messiah.

Simeon listened to God. We read that:

Luke 2:27 (KJV) And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

The Holy Spirit told Simeon that he would see Jesus before he left this life. The Holy Spirit led Simeon to Jesus. Simeon listened to God and heard His call. Beloved, you will not be blessed listening to public opinion or by following the crowd to destruction. The blessings of God come to those who HEAR and FOLLOW God – ALWAYS. We rob ourselves of blessing when we do not follow God nor hear His Word.

You do not look for flour in a tea bag.
You do not find the sea in the desert.
You cannot find eternal blessing in the temporal.
You must come to Him and hear Him as Simeon did.

Simeon got to do something that few people have ever done. We read:

Luke 2:28-29 (KJV) Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,  [29]  Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

Simeon held the baby Jesus in his arms. I find this amazing. Simeon held Jesus, and holding Jesus asked God to let him “depart in peace, according to Thy Word”. Simeon was not afraid of death. He held the Messiah in his arms. God answered his prayers. He got to see the Comforter of Israel in the flesh. As Simeon saw and held Jesus in his embrace he saw a Messiah not just for himself, but Simeon said:

Luke 2:30-32 (KJV) For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,  [31]  Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;  [32]  A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Let’s examine Simeon’s testimony.

  • Mine eyes have seen THY Salvation”. Oh how politically incorrect Simeon was! He is praising God and saying “here alone is Your Salvation”. There are no other Saviors, no other Messiahs, no other way unto God. Here in this Baby is the “hopes and fears of all the years are met in THEE tonight”. God has given but one Savior to mankind, and that Savior is the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • Which Thou hast prepared before the face of ALL PEOPLE”. That Christ is the Messiah was not hidden. God prophesied the Coming Christ from Genesis to Malachi. He gave illustrations of His crucifixion in the Sacrificial Laws of Moses. I am told that there are 353 prophecies that are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. God did not hide His intent. He sent His Son to be our One and Only Savior.
  • A light to lighten the Gentiles”. It is God’s intention through the Messiah to save not just Israel, but all people regardless of race. Christ would be born of Israel for Israel, but also for whosoever will believe in Him. Simeon looked backward to the promise God made through Isaiah saying:

Isaiah 49:6 (NKJV) Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

This Precious Jesus, this little God-Man, was not just born into this world for Simeon and his people. He came to die for ALL (2 Corinthians 5:15) because God …

1 Timothy 2:4 (NKJV) … desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

  • and the Glory of Thy people Israel”. Jesus Christ is the Shekinah Glory of God lost from an unbelieving Israel, but found by those who love God. Not all Israel is Israel (Romans 9:6). There will be many Jews who rejected Christ as Lord and Savior who will, like the rich man of Luke 16:23 who “lift up their eyes in Hell”. Oh that they had lifted up their eyes to Heaven while on this earth. Jesus wants no one in Hell. We choose Hell by rejecting Christ.

After praising God and witnessing that Jesus is the One and Only Christ Simeon blessed Mary and Joseph:

Luke 2:34-35 (KJV)  And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;  [35]  (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Though Simeon blessed them both he only addressed Mary. Why? I believe it is because though Joseph was a good Stepfather it was Mary that would be with Jesus all the way to the Cross. When the soldier drives a spear into Christ’s side I asm sure this was like a sword piercing her own soul. God through Simeon would tell Mary that her Son would suffer and die, but that His death would not be in vain. Through Christ “the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed”.

What a person thinks of God is revealed in how they respond to Christ.

God sent Jesus to this earth to make payment for our sins. If we receive Him as Lord and Savior then the Bible says that there is no condemnation before God. But if we reject Him, refusing Him and Savior and Lord, then we are condemned already, just as Jesus would later tell Nicodemus.

John 3:18-21 (KJV)   He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.   [19]   And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.   [20]   For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.   [21]   But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Have you believed on Him. Have you embraced Jesus as Simeon did, and are His arms around you? If so, praise God, you are children of light. If not, today is the day of salvation. Receive Him as Lord and Savior.

May God touch your hearts with His Word.

But God

but1 Corinthians 2:9-10 (KJV)  But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.  [10]  But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:11-16 (KJV)  For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.  [12]  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.  [13]  Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.  [14]  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.  [15]  But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.  [16]  For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

One of my favorite preachers – gone to be with Jesus over 150 years ago – is C.H. Spurgeon. Pastor C.H. Spurgeon wrote:

HOW very frequently verses of Scripture are misquoted! Instead of turning to the Bible to see how it is written, and saying, “How do you read it?” we quote from one another. And thus a passage of Scripture is handed down misquoted, by a kind of tradition—from father to son, and passes as current among a great number of Christians! How very frequently at our prayer meetings do we hear our brethren describing heaven as a place of which we cannot conceive! They say, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” And there they stop, not seeing that the very marrow of the whole passage lies in this—“But God has revealed them unto us by His Spirit,” so that the joys of heaven (if this passage alludes to heaven, which I take it is not quite as clear as some would suppose), are after all not things of which we cannot conceive, for “God has revealed them unto us by His Spirit.”

I have been guilty of this myself.

It is so easy in the flesh of man to allow the flesh to guide us. Too many Pastors and Churches have departed from the Scripture and gone off into the unknown realm of public opinion and speculation. We must read the Scripture in this New Year. We must bring our Bibles into the Church with us. We must meditate and mark in our Scriptures, learning the truths that God would have us know.

The Apostle writes – let’s read that again –

EYE hath not seen, nor EAR heard, neither have entered into the HEART of man, the THINGS which God hath prepared for them that LOVE him.

People read this and say “yes, Heaven is unimaginable in glory”, and I agree with that. But the text does not have the word “Heaven” in it at any place. The text speaks of the THINGS that God has prepared for those who love Him.

Certainly Heaven is one of the THINGS that those who love the Lord have to look forward to. Jesus promised us Heaven with mansions and His glory. He said …

John 14:2-3 (NKJV) In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

Heaven is a beautiful place that we cannot comprehend in our human minds. John the Revelator wrote of Heaven. But I have no doubt that when we get there we will be amazed. But the Apostle in our text is not speaking of just Heaven. He is saying that we – with our human processes – cannot fully understand all the things that God has prepared for His Children. Our human minds cannot fully grasp the blessings of God. This is why he continues with:

BUT GOD HATH REVEALED THEM UNTO US BY HIS SPIRIT

The carnal fleshly mind cannot grasp how much God wants to bless us. Now I’m not talking about the “Wealth and Prosperity” Gospels of Joel Osteen, et al.

There are indeed poor Christians in this world Jesus said “The poor you have with you always” (Matthew 26:11) and “The poor have the Gospel preached to them” (Matthew 11:5).

There are indeed persecuted Christians in this world Jesus said “A servant is not greater than his Master. If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you also” (John 15:20). Christians are martyred today at a rate that EXCEEDS the murders of the ancient Roman Empire.

There are indeed plagued Christians in this world Christians suffer disease and sickness just as non-Christians do. I know many good Christians who love the Lord that have been afflicted by disease and physical death. Hospitals are filled with believer and non-believer.

But there are NO abandoned Christians in the world God the Holy Spirit abides with the Children of God. He is with us INDIVIDUALLY

What the Apostle is telling us in this passage is not focused on Heaven, but on the Holy Spirit of God. The text is telling us that the blessings God has for His Children – those who love Him – cannot be understood or processed by the human mind. We must have the inspiration and guidance of God. We must be illuminated by the Holy Spirit.

You can strain, you can work at it, but until you release yourselves to the Holy Spirit of God you will not grow to know the fullest blessings of God. The Apostle said “but God hath revealed them (these blessings, these things) unto us by His Spirit. The blessings of the Christian way of life do not come in OUR power but through HIS Power.

Let’s Follow The Word THINGS In The Context

Do you see that word THINGS in verse 9? 1 Corinthians 2:9 (KJV)  But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the THINGS which God HATH PREPARED FOR THEM THAT LOVE HIM.

Let’s follow that word “things” (Greek ὅς hos) as it presents through our text. Verse 10:

1 Corinthians 2:10 (KJV)  But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all THINGS, yea, the deep THINGS of God.

God’s Spirit – His Indwelling Presence – reveals the THINGS that God has prepared for us His Children. The Holy Spirit searches all THINGS, the DEEP THINGS of God. The Holy Spirit guides us and teaches us the truths that God would have us know. When you received Christ as Lord and Savior God the Holy Spirit came to live inside of you. The unbeliever cannot understand the THINGS of God. This is what we are told in this context:

1 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV)  But the NATURAL MAN RECEIVETH NOT THE THINGS of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

A lost person cannot understand the deep things of God, no more than the darkness can understand the light. Only a saved OR A SUPERNATURAL person can. You cannot understand the deep things of God unless you are in God and God is in you.

People do things all the time that I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. I am sure there are things I do that YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. If you could get inside my soul you would understand better. That’s what Paul is saying in

1 Corinthians 2:11 (KJV)  For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

We only truly understand ourselves. We can somewhat grow to understand others, but never fully understand them, because we cannot get into their minds nor they into our minds. Only the Spirit of God knows the THINGS of God. I can talk all day long to a lost person, and all that person will ever grasp is the basic Gospel of salvation. The Gospel is simply:

Repent – surrender yourselves as sinners to God – believing Christ is your Lord and Savior

The Gospel is not hard.

Until a person surrenders to the Gospel they will not understand the deeper THINGS of God.

UNLESS you are surrendered to the Gospel you will NOT receive the Spirit of God.

And if you DO NOT have the Spirit of God you cannot understand the deeper things of God. The Holy Spirit of God is God Himself teaching and reaching. You cannot have Cable Television without Cable. You cannot have Internet without Broadband. You cannot have Electricity without a Generator. You cannot understand the things of God without His Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:12 (KJV)  Now WE have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the THINGS that are freely given to us of God.

The lover of God – the genuine believer in Christ – receives the Holy Spirit of God into his or her life at the moment of salvation. When you RECEIVE Christ by faith you RECEIVE the Spirit. At that point a person becomes a member of Christ’s Body, His Church. The Holy Spirit of God never, never, never leaves the one who loves God. Jesus said:

John 14:16-17 (NKJV) And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter), that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom THE WORLD CANNOT RECEIVE, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

The person who loves the THINGS of this world cannot receive the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is promised to them that love God, not to those who love the world, the flesh, or the devil. The definition of “LOST” is “One Who Has Wandered From God.

Saved people are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. When you are born again through the operation of the Spirit the Apostle says:

1 Corinthians 3:16 (NKJV) Do you not know that YOU ARE THE TEMPLE OF GOD and that the SPIRIT OF GOD DWELLS IN YOU?

Romans 8:9 (NKJV) But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if ANYONE DOES NOT HAVE THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST, HE IS NOT HIS.

The Holy Spirit is the Promise of the Father, the blessing that Jesus bestows on His people. Jesus said of the Holy Spirit:

John 16:5-15 (NKJV) But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, HE WILL CONVICT the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All THINGS that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

In John 16:15 we see that word THINGS again, but this time it is the Greek πᾶς pas which means ALL THINGS. Jesus has all things that the Father has. The Spirit shares these things with us who love Him.

What Are The THINGS God Has Prepared For Them That Love Him?

Certainly Heaven is one of those things. One day we shall be with the Lord we love forever. But Heaven is on the other side. What are the THINGS God has prepared for His Children now?

I Have Been REDEEMED From Enslavement To Sin And The World

The Bible tells us that:

Hebrews 9:12 (NKJV) Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Hebrews 9:14 (NKJV) how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

When I was in the world I lived to please fallen man and fallen self. I was enslaved to sin and its effects. But because of Christ I have been set free. I am enabled through God’s Spirit to “put off the old man and put on the new man”. The Apostle said:

Ephesians 4:22-24 (NKJV) … that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

I do not live to please or serve the devil, the world, or the flesh, but I live to please my Savior and His Indwelling Spirit. I am no longer lost, but found. I am no longer a child of his world but I am a child of HIS KINGDOM – victorious in Him.

I Am JUSTIFIED, Made Righteous Before God Because Of Christ

Romans 5:1-2 (NKJV) Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 3:24-25 (NKJV) being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,

To be justified means that God can now see you as His Child, not as a lost sinned. You stand in His presence whole and complete, loved of God, eternally in His Family. You come under the watch care of God as His precious Child. You are no longer a Child of this world, but live in this world as a stranger and pilgrim. You are on mission every day of your life telling others of the love of God available through Jesus Christ.

I Am UNITED With Christ Jesus

The entire purpose of the Christian is to be like Christ, and God does this through His Holy Spirit. The Bible tells me that the lover of God in Christ …

Created In Christ (Ephesians 2:10)

Crucified With Christ (Galatians 2:20)

Buried With Christ (Colossians 2:12)

Baptized Into Christ And His Death (Romans 6:3)

United With Christ In His Resurrection (Romans 6:5)

Seated With Christ In The Heavenly Places (Ephesians 2:6)

Christ Is Formed In Believers (Galatians 4:19)

Christ Dwells In Our Hearts (Ephesians 3:17)

The Church Is The Body Of Christ (1 Corinthians 6:15; 12:27)

Christ Is In Us (2 Corinthians 13:5) And We Are In Him (1 Corinthians 1:30)

The Church Is One Flesh With Christ (Ephesians 5:31–32)

In Christ We Are Sanctified (1 Corinthians 1:2)

Called (1:9)

Made Alive (Ephesians 2:5)

Created Anew (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Adopted (Galatians 3:26)

And Elected (Ephesians 1:4–5)

The destiny of the Christ Follower is bound to Jesus. God promises an ABUNDANT life as well as an ETERNAL life once we give ourselves to Him. But these precious promises only come to those who love God NOW, who give themselves to God NOW.

the things which God hath prepared for them that love him

God has a great life prepared for you. But you must come to Him believing that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who earnestly seek Him. You can continue with life as existence, life in this world enslaved to the things of this world … or you can come to Jesus and give your lives to Him. He will take you into His Family, He will save you. Come to Him surrendered!

May God touch your hearts with His Word!

Without Vision We Perish

blind-manW

Proverbs 29:18 (NASB) Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained,
But happy is he who keeps the law.

I hate to see any company die. I saw K-Mart die. Oh, there are a few K-Marts here and there, but it’s no where near the robust business it was when I was a child. K-Mart died. Ponderosa died. And I am afraid a company I came to know and respect because of Steve Jobs … I am afraid Apple is going to die. Why? Because like K-Mart, Ponderosa, and dozens of other businesses that have died Apple has forgotten it’s reason for being.

I originally purchased a MacBook Air because my son Michael recommended it. Frankly, I’ve never been disappointed. The battery life is outstanding. I can usually run around 8 hours before recharging. The charging system unparalleled. The Magsafe system charges the Mac in about an hour. The lighted keyboard is genius. The SSD system run super fast, perfect for a busy professional. With one Thunderbolt port, two USB ports, headset jack and a card reader it does everything I need it to do. Fast, light dependable. Please, may I have another. Pricey? Yes, but I’ll pay for performance. So Apple comes out with the new MacBook Pro.

It’s a bust. It is the first Apple in recent history to not receive a recommendation from Consumer Reports. NOT RECOMMENDED. Consumer Reports writes:

“The MacBook Pro battery life results were highly inconsistent from one trial to the next.

“For instance, in a series of three consecutive tests, the 13-inch model with the Touch Bar ran for 16 hours in the first trial, 12.75 hours in the second, and just 3.75 hours in the third. The 13-inch model without the Touch Bar worked for 19.5 hours in one trial but only 4.5 hours in the next. And the numbers for the 15-inch laptop ranged from 18.5 down to 8 hours.

“Those were just a few of the results; we tested battery life on these laptops repeatedly.”

The “Touch Bar” is a nice addition. But Apple has removed all USB and charging ports from the new Macs. Depending on the model you can get it with two or three “USB-C”, then you have to buy adapters to modify the these new type ports into USBs or whatever. The price of the unit didn’t go down with all these additional adapters the customer will have to purchase . No, the Mac is priced higher than ever. Over $4000.00 for the top of the line. Are you kidding me? The “Touch Bar” is nice, but not that nice.

When Steve Jobs died I believe the company lost its vision. And if it doesn’t get it back – and soon – it will soon be another dead corporation. That will be sad. Never lose the vision of the Founder.

The Church of Jesus has largely in this United States lost the vision of its Founder. We are called to be light, not part of the darkness. We are called to speak the truth in love, not in hatred. We are called to love God and one another sacrificially. We are called to get outside of our comfort zone and go forward, together, carrying our crosses while we look to Him Who carried His Cross. We can become like K-Mart, Tast-E-Freeze, Ponderosa, and other defunct and broken businesses. There is no government bailout for the Church like there was (shamefully) for GM years ago. We stand together in Christ following Christ being like Christ or we fall into dissolution. The power is in looking to our Founder, to His Word. May God help His people do this in the new year.

The Christmas Story Is Suffering

mangerLuke 2:1-21 (KJV)1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. 21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

I often talk to other Christians about suffering and pain. People often ask me “Why is God allowing me to go through this?”, and the “this” they are talking about is never a good thing. My answer is usually in two parts.

I don’t know why”
But I do know that God loves you”

As I looked at what we call “The Christmas Story” this year and meditated on it I was impressed by God’s Spirit over the suffering that God put His Son Jesus through. Now I know that the Father loves the Son, and the Son loves the Spirit. And Jesus never doubted the love of His Father. He said in :

John 3:35 (ESV) The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.

John 5:20 (ESV) For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. …

Jesus never doubted the love of His Father. Yet when Jesus came into the world His birth was filled with suffering. When we read the Christmas Story we hear how

Luke 2:1-5 (KJV) And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child ….

I want you to notice that

Mary Was Great With Child

She was in her last Trimester, with all the swelling and suffering that goes with pregnancy. Caesar Augustus sent out a decree that all the world should be taxed and there were no exceptions to that rule. You went to your home town and were taxed and counted, or you were guilty of treason and could be killed for it. Caesar didn’t care, and neither did the Roman Government. You went. Mary had to go. Nearly every Christmas Card shows Mary riding on the back of a donkey? Did she? The Bible doesn’t tell us this. As it was 90 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem it is likely that Joseph put her on some beast of burden to aid her in the journey. The wealthy used horses and wagons for travel, and neither Joseph nor Mary were wealthy. This would have been a hard trip even for a woman who was not “great with Child”.

Where Were Mary and Joseph’s Parents?

Joseph and Mary had parents. According to Matthew 1:16 Joseph’s daddy was called Jacob. In Luke 3:23 we see that Joseph is the Son-In-Law of Heli, who was Mary’s daddy. Yet throughout the Gospels – and particularly in the Christmas Story – the parents of Joseph and Mary are missing in action. In those days families traveled together, and since Joseph and Mary had to travel to Bethlehem to be taxed it is certain that their parents would also have to go. Since all the family had to go to be taxed and since Mary was “great with Child” wouldn’t their parents have accompanied them? Yet the parents are not mentioned. Why?

I suspect much of this had to do with the virgin birth of Christ. Though the Angel told both Mary and Joseph that Christ was being born of the Holy Spirit (see Luke 1:35 & Matthew 1:20) there is no indication in Scripture that their parents were so informed. It is possible that Mary’s pregnancy was perhaps viewed by the immediate family as an indiscretion, the result of sexual sin. Whether this is the case or not it is a fact that Mary and Joseph go to Bethlehem alone. Their parents are not there to help them.

Luke 2:6-7 (KJV) And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Where Is The Midwife, The Helpers, The Doctor?

Mary was giving birth to the Son of God – who was there to help her? Only Joseph. Most women in those days were assisted in birth by a midwife, but there is no midwife. Mary and Joseph are dispossessed strangers, homeless. In any birth the Child would be received into loving arms, cleaned up, then placed in its mother’s arms. Mary bore Jesus then, exhausted, put that Baby in a manger, a straw lined trough. More than likely there were animals in the place where they were, and Joseph had to keep the animals from the manger. Can you imagine how humiliating this is for the parents, how humiliating for Joseph who loved his wife.

No doctor delivered Jesus.
No grandparents held the little Jesus in their arms.
He was laid in a manger.
Not in a crib, but a manger.
The Son of God had no room in the Inn.
Just in a manger.

But they weren’t alone. The angels were watching. I can imagine the angels of God watching the birth of the Son of God unfold. Now no angel in his right mind would question what Almighty God was doing. But I suspect what was happening was causing a stir. Joseph and Mary are alone in the barn until Christ is born. God has entered humanity. And God is to be worshiped. The Bible tells us that:

Luke 2:8-9 (KJV) And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

God’s glory shined round about these shepherds. His Shekinah Glory filled the night. The Father had just bore a Son, God had become Man, and God must be worshiped. The Apostle wrote:

Hebrews 12:28-29 (ESV) Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.

That word has been in my heart all week. Our God is a consuming fire. His Kingdom shall prevail. Though the darkness try to strangle His glory, the Light shines through the darkness. The suffering has a purpose. It is not indifference that has brought the Son of God to a manger, but it is so that those who are trapped in darkness can see the bright light of God’s love.

God loves His Son, but caused Him to suffer even from the beginning.

He suffered so that He could be a Savior to all the people. The Angel told the Shepherds:

Luke 2:10-11 (KJV) And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

The birth of Christ is good tidings of great joy to ALL people. To

Red and Yellow, Black and White
They are precious in His sight

The Savior is born, which is Christ the Lord. This helpless Baby is Christ, the Messiah. But He is also “The Lord”. Where will the Lord be found? The Angel tells the Shepherds:

Luke 2:12 (KJV) And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

There were perhaps hundreds of babies born that very night all throughout the land, and every one of those babies would be wrapped in swaddling clothes. But only one Baby would be found lying in a manger. Every other baby would be cradled in a crib or in a parents arms. But Mary exhausted would lay her prized bundle down.

The sign of the Savior is that He is lying in a manger.
The sign of the Savior is that He is suffering.

The same Isaiah that foretold the virgin birth of Christ also foretold His suffering. The Prophet wrote:

Isaiah 53:2-9 (ESV) For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? 9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Jesus Christ is the Lamb born for our salvation. From the Manger to the Cross to the Grave His life was one of suffering. Yet He chose the suffering. He chose the nails. He chose to come and give Himself for us. He chose to be born of a virgin, and chose to walk among us. The King left the palace and walked among the peasants. But more than this, God walked with us and will walk with us if we but receive Him as He is.

Christmas this year will fall on Sunday, and many will not come to worship Him because other things will take precedence. He IS LORD!

Family, friends, the Christmas meal, the gifts under the Christmas Tree, the children playing with toys. Many will not worship Jesus this Christmas because it inconveniently landed on a Sunday. So the day will take precedence over the Savior.

The Shepherds had the right idea. Though watching their sheep at night they did not hesitate to leave their job and go to see the Savior.

Luke 2:15-16 (KJV)And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

The Shepherds did not dawdle, nor did the Angel command that they go to Bethlehem. No, they went with haste to where Jesus laid. Oh Lord, deliver us as your people from indifference. God’s people are to be on fire for Jesus! The Bible says that we are to be …

Titus 2:13-14 (ESV) .. waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

God’s people are called to passionately want to see Him who is the Christ, the Lord. So many are passionate about anyone and anything but Christ. Jesus warned,

Matthew 6:20-21 (ESV) but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

For many they treasure the things of this world, the relationships of this world, the business of this world, and yet have little thought of Heaven. If Heaven and the Christ of the Manger and of the Cross is rarely on your minds then will you be in His Heaven one day? The Shepherds did not delay. “Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass”. God took the time to tell us. God took the time to be incarnate. We can at least take the time to see Him.

Luke 2:17 (KJV) And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

The Shepherds did not immediately return to their sheep following their visit to the Manger. They went throughout the town telling others about Jesus. Did any others come to the Manger that night? The Bible doesn’t tell us that ANY came. People were busy celebrating, eating, coming together as families, much like we do every Christmas. We are told:

Luke 2:18 (KJV) And all they that heard it WONDERED at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

For many, then Christ is lost in Christmas. They “wondered” the Greek θαυμάζω thaumazō which means “to marvel at, to admire”. They were fascinated by the story, but no one headed over to the Manger to see what the Shepherds saw. And they lost a blessing.

Luke 2:20 (KJV) And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

The Shepherds were blessed because they did not stay at home in their comfort zone. They went. They both “heard and saw” the Christ, experiencing Jesus, and were blessed by Him. You will always be blessed when you both hear and do the will of God. Christ was born to be the Savior of all who believe in Him.

Jesus suffered for us, so that He can be with us in our suffering.

May God lead you closer to Him this Christmas Day!

Unto Us

unto-us

Isaiah 9:6-7 (KJV) For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

We often read Scripture without thinking about or meditating on what we are reading. For instance, the words “unto us” are repeated twice. Who is the “US” that the text addresses? Some would be quick to say “US means US. It is for US”. Well, that is true. But when it was originally written over 2700 years ago neither you nor I were here.

The original US was a broken people. It was for a nation that God lifted up and loved, but who turned from following Him. God addressed His nation saying:

Isaiah 1:4 (KJV) Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

Israel was broken by sin. The nation that defeated Egypt, a world power that took over Canaan, was going to be defeated by first Assyria, then Greece, and after 700 years would in the time of the virgin Mary would be under Roman bondage. Because of sin Israel’s Temple would be built not by God’s Children but by Herod, a son of Edom, descendant of Esau. Israel would be ruled not by the rightful ruler, the Descendant of King David, but by Herod the Horrible.

Why?

Because God’s people and God’s nation got away from their God. Compromise set in. Other things began to rule God’s Israel rather than God Himself. His Word was not taken seriously. The Bible says:

Psalm 33:11-12 (ESV) The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!

Psalm 33:18-21 (ESV) Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, 19 that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine. 20 Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. 21 For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.

God preserves His people. Israel suffered through many years of bondage to sin and death. Then one day the Promise of God was fulfilled. The Messiah came to a broken people, a sinful people, a repentant people. The promise of the Messiah was fulfilled in the Coming of Jesus Christ. Eternal God was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.

Jesus Christ is the Child Who was born, but the Son Who was given. He is not the Son Who was born, for Christ is Eternal God, always existent with both Father and Spirit. John declared without apology:

John 1:1-3 (KJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

John 1:14 (KJV) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Word was MADE FLESH and dwelt among us”. The Son of God was given, not created, but clothed in flesh in the virgin’s womb. God did a new thing in Christ. The Eternal Son of God became perfect and sinless man. God became the Son of Man, not through Joseph but through the Holy Spirit of God. The Child was born of Mary, but God was never born. The Son of God became like us, but without sin.

The Government Shall Be Upon His Shoulder

When Jesus Christ came He came preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom:

Matthew 4:23 (KJV) And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom …

Mark 1:14 (KJV) Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

Jesus did not preach a quick fix salvation, but invited people into the Kingdom of God. He called people to “Follow Me” and to submit to Him as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The “Gospel” literally means “Good News”. The Good News is this:

God loves you
God wants His best for you
You will find His best in loving Jesus
And living as a son of God in His Kingdom

Jesus did not merely invite His followers to “come and dine” but to “come and die”. To die to the world. To submit to Him and His Word. To live in the shadow of God. To “Take up your Cross and follow Me”. The Gospel is like a glorious pearl of great price, which Jesus said..

Matthew 13:44-46 (ESV) “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

The Kingdom of God is offered to every person who will receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The government shall be upon His shoulder. Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The day will come – and I believe it will comne sooner than later – that:

Philippians 2:9-11 (ESV) Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Government SHALL be on HIS shoulder. He is the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, The Messiah, the Ruler of all! There is no other Savior, and all other Kingdoms will one day fall to His. He is Lord!

His Name Shall Be Called Wonderful , Counsellor

Isaiah prophesies four names by which Jesus shall be declared, or literally, a Fourfold Name. The King James translators added a comma where no comma is needed. He is, literally, the Wonderful Counselor.

The word “Wonderful” (Hebrew פֶּלֶא pele’) is one of the descriptive terms of God Himself.

“Wonderful” means “to be indescribable or marvelous”. You see the word used of God in:

Who is like You among the gods, O LORD? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises, working wonders? (Exodus 15:11)

I shall remember the deeds of the LORD; surely I will remember Your wonders of old.(Psalm 77:11)

You are the God who works wonders; You have made known Your strength among thepeoples. (Psalm 77:14)

He wrought wonders before their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.(Psalm 78:12)

The heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. (Psalm 89:5)

Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul observes them. (Psalm 119:129)

O LORD, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; for You haveworked wonders, plans formed along ago, with perfect faithfulness. (Isaiah 25:1)

When Jesus came and walked among us it was clear that He was no ordinary Counselor. When just 12 years old …

Luke 2:46-47 (NIV) {Mary and Joseph}found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

and as Jesus grew the people stayed amazed at Him. The Bible often says:

Luke 4:32 (ESV) and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority.

Matthew 7:28-29 (ESV) … And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for He was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as the Scribes.

Jesus Christ is not just another Rabbi, Prophet, or Teacher. He is Almighty God among us. He is the Wonderful Counselor, and His Words are the Words of the Creator. To heed Him is to heed God Himself.

His Name Shall Be Called The Mighty God

Our Jesus is not only our Great Shepherd, but He is our Mighty God. As Creator He controls the world that He made. In Matthew 8 alone we see Jesus:

Touched a leper, and healed him (Matthew 8:3)
Spoke, and the Centurion’s servant was cured (Matthew 8:13)
Healed Peter’s mother-in-law of a fever (Matthew 8:15)
Commanded a thousand demons to leave a poor man (Matthew 8:32)

None of these things caused His followers to speak out in amazement. But when there was a great storm on the Sea of Galilee and they were in its midst, the Bible tells us that:

Matthew 8:25-27 (ESV) And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

What sort of man is this, indeed! This is no mere man. This is the Son of God, God Almighty, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. This is Jesus Christ, the Mighty God! Our Savior!

The Apostle Paul said of Christ that:

Colossians 1:15-20 (ESV) He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

His Name Shall Be Called .. The Everlasting Father

The Disciple Philip asked Jesus one day

John 14:8 (KJV) …. Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

Jesus told Philip:

John 14:9-10 (KJV) … Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou [then], Shew us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

When you see Jesus you see the Father revealed. Jesus often said “I come to do the will of Him that sent Me”:

John 4:34 (ESV) Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

John 6:38 (ESV) For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.

Luke 2:49 (NKJV) And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”

When you see Jesus, you see the Everlasting Father revealed. God loves us in spite of our foolishness and willfulness. And God sent His Son to reach out to whosoever will. To love every person who would be loved of God. To bring as many as possible to the Kingdom of God. Jesus said:

John 10:27-30 (KJV) My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any [man] pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave [them] me, is greater than all; and no [man] is able to pluck [them] out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and [my] Father are one.

There is perfect agreement between God the Father and God the Son and God the Spirit. If you call on the name of Jesus, you shall be saved. If you repent, turn, and come to Christ, your salvation is assured. Blessed be the Name of Jesus.

His Name Shall Be Called … The Prince Of Peace

The fourth part of Christ’s fourfold name is Prince of Peace. You cannot have Peace with God unless you have an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ. The Bible declares:

Romans 5:1 (KJV) Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

Philippians 4:7 (KJV) … the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

and one of my favorite verses:

1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV)  For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Where there is turmoil and confusion, Christ is not. But where Christ is, there is peace: peace with God, peace with men. When the Angels announced the birth of Christ into this world they declared:

Luke 2:10-14 (KJV)  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  [11]  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  [12]  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  [13]  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,  [14]  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Christ came that we might have peace with God. I pray that this Christmas that you surrender to the joy of Christ, that you accept this greatest Present of all into your life. Our text ends with:

The Zeal Of The Lord Of Hosts Will Perform This

Angry White Men Stole The Election

bill-clinton-donald-trump-angry-white-men-1482163792-640x434

Recently ex-President and Monica Lewinsky adulterer Bill Clinton said in a speech that “Trump knows how to get angry white men to vote for him”, and that this was a major reason that Donald Trump will be our next President. Is that truth?

On Election Day everyone was confident that Clinton was going to win the Presidency in a landslide. I went to bed on Election Night, and woke up surprised. Clinton lost. Trump won. You can split hairs, but Trump won according to the rules, the CONSTITUTIONAL Rules. You remember that paperwork that our Founding Fathers – a bunch of Angry White angry-white-menMen – wrote. That CONSTITUTION that gives us unprecedented freedom, freedoms the rest of the world wishes it had? That UNPARALLELED CONSTITUTION that makes America a place where people want to cross the Rio Grande, sneaking in if they can’t get in any other way? That’s the CONSTITUTION that gives everyone freedom:

Freedom to burn or honor the United States Flag
Freedom to report the news fairly or as a twisted lie
Freedom to vote for Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Socialist, or Polka Dot Bear
Freedom to riot, march, and act like a 6 year olds
Freedom to act idiotic or with dignity
Freedom to argue over bathrooms
Freedom to pervert or exalt yourselves sexually

It was Constitutional freedom that allowed the losing side to cry out “Who do we blame?” Let’s blame Comey. Let’s blame Russia. Let’s blame someone. Let’s blame …. I know …. let’s blame “Angry White Men”. Let’s not blame shady behavior from the losing side, either from the media or from the candidate herself. It was “Angry White Men” – a patently racist statement if I’ve ever heard one – that destroyed this country by letting Trump into office. “What do we do now?” the losing side cried because the CONSTITUTION allowed it.

“I know. Let’s go against the Constitution. Let’s get washed up actors and angry weird malcontents to demand that the Electoral College turn liar and thief. We can’t win honestly, so we’ll win dishonestly”

So they protested, shouted, cried, whined, and acted like 6 year old children denied a toy at Walmart. The Electoral College met and – believe it or not – Trump lost 2 electoral votes, while Clinton lost 5. Let me say that again. Trump lost 2, Clinton 5.

Those darn Angry White Men won again!

What a racist and insensitive term! There’s nothing wrong with being “angry”, as the ones throwing the charge are obviously angry. There’s nothing wrong with being “white”, no more than there is in being any other color. God gave us our color. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with being “men”. God made us men. Men should stand up for what they believe in. If we had more men rather than game playing boys in America today we’d be in much better shape as a nation.

Listen my friends, I didn’t care for any of the candidates that ran for office this year. I did vote my conscience, and no, it’s none of your business. I am an Independent voter and I do vote every single election. I didn’t like it when President Obama won a second term to office. I didn’t like it when he and other confused people pushed a European half model of health care on our nation. Poor people cannot afford 200-300 dollars a month for Healthcare, and – just as I feared – Healthcare rates did not stay the same but rose 70% or more for most people.  Even with the media twisting the truth few can say the last eight years have been Camelot.

I can’t say I was enamored with Bill Clinton, George Bush, or G.W. Bush. Under their watch they sponsored sad programs like NAFTA which led to lost industry in our nation. They also were responsible for downsizing and starving our military. I know, because I am a retired Airman.    I served through a Carter presidency, a Peanut Farmer who should have stayed in the field, a nightmare for the military. Will Trump be better? I hope so. I pray so. But let’s put this real clear:

I sucked it up and tolerated being on the losing side many times over the past 40 years. Regardless as to who won I prayed for and supported that President and my nation. Jesus said it best when He said:

Mark 3:25 …. if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

lincolnAbraham Lincoln on June 16, 1858, at what was then the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield accepted the Illinois Republican Party’s nomination as that state’s United States senator. In his acceptance speech Lincoln (who would later become our 16th President) quoted Christ, then tied what Jesus said into our United States:

“A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become lawful in all the States, old as well as new — North as well as South.”

Those who continue to fight once the fight is over are guilty of treason and confusion. It is time for those who lost to put on their big boy and big girl pants. Get up. Grow up. Look up. It is time to support and pray for our Constitutionally elected leaders, and praise God that we live in such a free country. I’ve been where our Constitution wasn’t. Take my word for it – you don’t want to go there!

Mary Worshipped God

worship

Luke 1:46-55 (KJV) And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. 54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; 55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Pastor Mark Driscoll once observed that there are two ways to live your life.

  • The first and most common way – the way most people live – is to start with your life and your experiences and project that on God. When things are good and life is easy then God – if you think about Him at all – is good and kind. God loves me, and cares for me. But then life takes a turn for the worse and you begin to wonder …

Is there really a God?
Does this God – if there is a God – care for me?

When you start with yourself and with your experiences you become a slave to your emotions and suffering. You project the negatives of life toward God, and when you need Him the most you run from Him.

  • The second and better way to live your life is to trust God, to believe His promises, and to cling to Him no matter what might come your way. The Bible tells us that God made the world good, but that we corrupted the world by making ourselves the center of it. We have ourselves brought sin and suffering into the world, but God loves us and wants to bless us. The Prophet Jeremiah said:

Jeremiah 17:5-8 (NKJV) … “Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the Lord. 6 For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited. 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. 8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”

The life dependent upon God is the life blessed by God. The life dependent on self, or on human strength, is a life enslaved to the world. Throughout the Scriptures God gives us glimpses at people who have lived following God and blessing, and those who follow self and cursing.

Today we’re going to look at the life of Mary.

Last week the Angel Gabriel came to Mary and told her something astounding. Over 700 years before Mary was born God promised that the Messiah would come to this earth in a miraculous way. Isaiah wrote:

Isaiah 7:14 (NKJV) … Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

Israel waited for this promise to be fulfilled. Year after year Israel looked, but the Messiah did not come. The Apostle Paul said:

Galatians 4:4-5 (NKJV) … when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Gabriel came to Mary and told her that she was the virgin of Isaiah 7:14. It was through Mary that Messiah would come. The Holy Spirit would come on Mary, and she would be the vessel by which God would become man.

Now Mary Had Reason To Worry

Now when we read these words we have a natural tendency to impose today’s standards on yesterday. We think “What a great honor was bestowed on Mary”! But this was ancient Israel. The Law of Moses was in force. Single mothers were rare. We live in a time where the sexual revolution has normalized behavior which was not normal in Mary’s day.

People were killed for sexual indiscretion in Mary’s day.

Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph. How would he take this? Would Joseph end the engagement publicly, risking her life.

And what of her friends and family. When she began to show the baby, would she be ostracized, cast out?

Mary had a lot that she could have worried about. But instead she told Gabriel:

Luke 1:38-39 (KJV) …. Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.  [39]  And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

Mary didn’t let worry consume her. She gave herself willingly to the Lord. But she also did something else …

Mary ran to be with her cousin Elisabeth. Elisabeth was pregnant, though she was well past child bearing years. Elisabeth was carrying the future John the Baptist. People who trust the Lord come together to share our faith and to worship our Lord. Mary was going through a God sent pregnancy, and Elisabeth was also being blessing in a similar way. When Mary got to Elisabeth’s home we read:

Luke 1:41-45 (KJV)  And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:  [42]  And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.  [43]  And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?  [44]  For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.  [45]  And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

When God’s people are focused on loving the Lord then worship happens. When worship happens, faith is affirmed. Elisabeth and Mary came together to serve the Lord, and worship spilled out.

But Mary Chose To Worship Rather Than Worry

Illustrate God saves us so that we can worship Him. I saw a cute cartoon the other day. Two characters were talking to one another. The first said “I just gave money to a Church”. His friend replied “Good for you. Why did you do that?”

So that one day I automatically get into Heaven and avoid the fiery furnace of hell.

His friend said “A donation to a Church doesn’t guarantee that.”

to which he replied “Would it be wrong to steal it back from the collection plate?”

His friend said “Yes. Robbing God’s house is frowned upon.”

God made us in His image and in His likeness, and calls us to come to Him for salvation. Saved we worship Him. We trust Him, we love Him Who first loved us. Worship brings balance to our lives. Worship causes us to focus on God in the midst of what is going on in our lives.

Let’s Look At Mary’s Worship

Luke 1:46 (KJV) And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the LORD

Mary starts by magnifying or glorifying “The Lord”. God is “Lord” to her. He is in control of all things. Mary has so many things she could be worrying about, but instead she is letting God be the Sovereign King of her life.

God is Lord of all. He is in charge. He controls everything (Ephesians 1:11 NKJV) “according to the counsel of His will”. Arthur W. Pink wrote:

“What do we mean by [the sovereignty of God]? We mean the supremacy of God, the kingship of God, the god-hood of God. To say that God is Sovereign is to declare that God is God. To say that God is Sovereign is to declare that He is the Most High, doing according to His will in the army of Heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth, so that none can stay His hand or say unto Him what doest Thou? (Dan. 4:35). To say that God is Sovereign is to declare that He is the Almighty, the Possessor of all power in Heaven and earth, so that none can defeat His counsels, thwart His purpose, or resist His will (Psa. 115:3). To say that God is Sovereign is to declare that He is “The Governor among the nations” (Psa. 22:28), setting up kingdoms, overthrowing empires, and determining the course of dynasties as pleaseth Him best. To say that God is Sovereign is to declare that He is the “Only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords” (1 Tim. 6:15). Such is the God of the Bible.” A. W. Pink, The Sovereignty of God, chapter 1.”

Fatalism gives the end result over to some unnamed power called “Fate”, but the Christ Follower turns her life over to our Loving and All Powerful God. God is able!

Luke 1:47 (KJV) … And my spirit hath rejoiced in GOD MY SAVIOR.

To Mary, God is her SAVIOR. God means no harm to His Children by faith. It is His will to do what is best for us. Mary is a sinner, and the Apostle Paul was the greatest of sinners, for he wrote:

1 Timothy 1:15 (NKJV) This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

It doesn’t matter how big a sinner you think you are – God is a greater Savior. He saves whosoever will come unto God by Him, seeing He ever lives to make intercession for them. God would protect Mary, for God was Mary’s Savior.

Luke 1:48 (KJV) For {God} hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden:

God knows everything we are going through. Jesus told us:

Matthew 10:29-31 (ESV) Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Matthew 6:8 (ESV)… your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

The God Who called Mary to bear the Messiah knows what she needs. He watches her life, just as He watches our lives. We may not understand why some things happen as they do, but we can rest in the knowledge that God is watching, God is monitoring, and God will make it all work out for our best.

Luke 1:49 (KJV) For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

God is mighty, and none can stop His purposes. But in His might God is BOTH personal as well as holy. Mary said that her Mighty God …

hath done TO ME great things

Our God is a PERSONAL GOD. He speaks to US in prayer. He talks to US through His Word and His Spirit. God calls each and every person to a personal relationship with Him. And

HOLY is His Name

God is not good and bad, wicked and righteous. God is HOLY in everything He does. Some people get power then run over everyone with that power. Some people frighten me. I have had people approach me to become a Deacon or a Minister in the Church that, when I talk to them, the hair raises up on the back of my neck. Power is dangerous in the hands of some people. But not with God. God is both MIGHTY and HOLY. What He does is always right, for He cannot be unrighteous.

Luke 1:50-51 (KJV) And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

God is MERCIFUL, and bestows mercy on those who “fear Him”. The prideful person need not think they shall be blessed of God. The Bible says:

James 4:6 (ESV) But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

God intervenes PERSONALLY for those who “fear Him”. Mary said “He hath showed strength with HIS ARM”. God gets involved. He tackles the bully. He defeats the foe. There is nothing God cannot do, if we put our trust in Him. God blesses those who trust in Him. But He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. The prideful put their trust in an illusion, in idols, in idiocy. And God scatters such foolishness.

Luke 1:52-53 (KJV) He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

Someone once said that

God comforts the distressed, and distresses the comfortable

Those who think they are “mighty” in themselves in time are torn down by God. Those who are hungry God fills with good things, but those who are self sufficient – the rich – God sends away empty. This reminds me of Jesus’ sermon on the mount, where He preached:

Matthew 5:3-12 (ESV) “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Blessings come to those who come to God with empty hands.

Luke 1:54-55 (KJV) He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; 55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

And God never forgets His promises. God promised Adam a Messiah. God promised Abraham a Messiah. God promised David a Messiah. God promised Israel a Messiah.

And God did what He promised. God always does what He promises. So let’s worship Him. Let’s praise Him. Let’s bring our lives to Him and seek His strength rather than worry. Jesus told us that:

Luke 15:10 (NKJV) Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

I have heard it said that the angels rejoice when a sinner repents. That’s not what the text says. It says “joy in the PRESENCE of the Angels of God”. Who is in the PRESENCE of the Angels? The Saints who have gone before – and God Himself. God rejoices when a sinner repents and comes to Him for salvation. Will you come to Him?

May God touch your hearts with His Word.

A Better Father

16_better_father

Hebrews 12:4-13 (KJV) Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. 12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; 13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

The “Best Selling” Sermons today are those sermons that focus on “God is Love”. And “God is Love”. But we today misunderstand what “Love” is.

Love is more than a feeling.
Love is an action.
Love does good even if it hurts.

Jesus said:

Matthew 5:43-48 (ESV) You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your ENEMIES and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Love is not a puddle that we fall into and crawl out of.
Love is an action, a righteous action, regardless of feeling.

You may in your heart despise a person – have an enemy – and yet as a child of God you are to do good and right to that enemy no matter how you feel. This past week God sent the blessing of rain on the just and the unjust. There were people out there that enjoyed the blessing of rain on their yards who were living in lifestyles that God condemns as sinful. There were people out there getting the blessing of rain who use the name of “Jesus Christ” as a curse, and who mock God and His Bible. How do you think that God feels about their behavior? And yet in love He still blesses them.

We love our enemy by doing good to them
regardless as to how we feel
because our Heavenly Father said so!

God expects His Children to obey. Always. God disciplines His Children when they do not obey, and God spanks His Children when they do not heed His discipline. When you were born again by faith in Christ, entered into the Family of God by the Holy Spirit of God, you became what is known as a Child of God. We who believe are Children together in His Family. Children obey the Father. And God Treats Every One Of His Children The Same Way – Like A Good Parent. We read:

Hebrews 12:5 (KJV) And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, ..

Some translations like the New International Version mistranslate the first part of this text as “have you forgotten”. That’s wrong. The text says “you have forgotten”.

In the midst of trials and of pain we often forget what
God has told us about trials and of pain.

Trials and pain do not come on us because God doesn’t love us. Trials and pain come on us because God does love us. When Job was suffering on this earth (and Job suffered as few mortals ever suffer) his friend Eliphaz came to him and truthfully said:

Job 5:17-18 (KJV) Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: 18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

The wisest man who ever lived was Solomon, and Solomon quoted Eliphaz then added to his statement, writing:

Proverbs 3:11-12 (KJV) My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: 12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

The writer of Hebrews quotes this same truth for the third time.

Hebrews 12:5-6 (KJV) … My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6 For whom the Lord LOVETH he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he RECEIVETH.

If you are born again into the Family of God then God is your Father. Like a good Father the Almighty does two things to every one of His Children.

God CHASTENS His Children Because He Loves Us
God SCOURGES His Children Because We Are His

The word translated “Chasten” is the Greek παιδεύω paideuō which means “to train, correct, or discipline a child”. The word translated “Scourges” is the Greek μαστιγόω mastigoō which means “to flog or paddle, to practice corporeal or bodily punishment”.

God does two things with every one of His Children. He establishes a standard, then holds them to that standard. This is called discipline. When the child of God rejects the standard that God has set then God paddles that child. THIS IS GOOD PARENTING. Parents are to establish standards for their children, then paddle the children when the standard is not met. God does the same for every child.

1 God Disciplines Or Disciples His Children. I remember the day I went into the United States Air Force. I raised my hand with 50 other men at the Induction Center and swore my allegiance to our Country. Then we got on a bus. When it stopped at Lackland Air Force Base the meanest man I ever saw got on the bus. He proceeded to tell us that he was now our momma, our daddy, our boss, and even our God. I won’t you everything he said, but suffice it to say it was a little flowery. When we got off the bus we stood at attention, standing inside of footprints painted on the asphalt. We then marched (out of step at this point) down to the Barber for our heads to be shaved. We were given uniforms, footlockers, shown how to fold and stow our clothing, and over the next 8 weeks we were DISCIPLINED until we became fit to be in the United States Air Force. We got up at three in the morning, cleaned our barracks, and did everything TOGETHER. We were forced by DISCIPLINE to do what this Drill Instructor told us to do.

DISCIPLINE is a necessity for any organization. DISCIPLINE is necessary for a family. Many Preachers today preach a Gospel far removed from the Gospel that Christ and the Apostles taught. Salvation is certainly a gift of God, freely given, and it cannot be earned by your own works. How is a person saved? The Bible is quite clear:

Romans 10:9-13 (ESV) …. if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”.

Salvation begins when you CONFESS with your mouth JESUS IS LORD. You confess and you believe. If He is LORD then you surrender to Him. You cannot be saved if YOU ARE LORD. You can only be saved if HE IS LORD TO YOU.

This is very important, and clears up much confusion in the Family of God. HE IS LORD. You can’t be saved if He is not LORD to you. And once He is LORD to you, your actions will show it.

Several years ago I was preaching in West Tennessee and a gentleman came forward to be saved. When he came forward I asked him what I ask everyone:

Have you received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?”

His reply was “Yes I have”. Then I asked:

Will you allow me to Baptize you in water?”

His reply was “No, I don’t want to be baptized”. I told him “Jesus commands you to be baptized”. His response was “I don’t want to be baptized”.

This man was not saved! The Child Of God Obeys The One Who Saved Him

Now listen, Beloved. We are saved by Grace, not by keeping the Law. But once saved by Grace we enter into the Family of God. We obey God, the One Who saved us. You are not saved by being baptized, but if you are saved you will obey the Head of the Family.

The Head of the Family has rules that He expects us as His Children to follow.
This has ALWAYS been the case.
He IS Lord In Your Heart, Or You Are NOT Saved.

A Christ Follower is called “Disciple”. Read these verses:

Matthew 5:1 (KJV) And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his DISCIPLES came unto him:

Matthew 8:23 (KJV) And when {Jesus} was entered into a ship, his DISCIPLES followed him.

Matthew 9:10 (KJV) And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his DISCIPLES.

Matthew 9:11 (KJV) And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his DISCIPLES, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?

Matthew 9:19 (KJV) And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his DISCIPLES.

Matthew 9:37 (KJV) Then saith {Jesus} unto his DISCIPLES, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

Matthew 10:1 (KJV) And when {Jesus} had called unto him his twelve DISCIPLES, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

All of these texts are taken out of Matthew. Did you know that the word DISCIPLE (μαθητής mathētēs) is found 243 times in the New Testament, each time related to a follower of Christ? I have heard preachers say that “You are saved by Grace, but once saved CHOOSE to be a Disciple”. This is hogwash! Every one of God’s Children are under His Discipline, Disciples of God. He is Lord, and He is Head of His Family.

Isaiah 64:8 (ESV) But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.

The Fatherhood of God is tied to the great truth that He is the Potter, we are the clay. Think about that analogy for a moment. The Potter takes clay from out of the world. He presses the clay into a ball, then puts it in the middle of a spinning wheel. With His hands He forces the clay, until it becomes the vessel that it should be. This is the discipline of God.

The Apostles were DISCIPLES before they ever were Apostles. Children of God follow God. God disciplines His Children as a good Father disciplines His Family. He establishes standards, then with His hand insures we meet those standards.

Salvation is a free giftEphesians 2:8-9 (KJV) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Once saved, God disciplines usEphesians 2:10 (KJV) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

2 God Chastises Or Spanks (μαστιγόω mastigoō) His Children When We Are Disobedient.

Hebrews 12:6 (KJV) For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and SCOURGETH (μαστιγόω mastigoō) every SON whom he RECEIVETH.

Those who receive Jesus Christ as Savior are God’s Children. The Bible says:

John 1:12-13 (KJV)  But as many as received {Jesus}, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:  [13]  Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Galatians 3:26 (KJV)  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

God chastens or paddles His Children in a variety of ways. I believe God starts with the conscience. He pushes against our conscience, making us feel out of sorts when we do that which does not honor and glorify Him. God the Holy Spirit – the Indweller of every Son of God – begins to speak to our conscience.

John 16:13 (ESV) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

God begins just as a good Parent begins by speaking to our conscience, telling us what is right and wrong, and then confirming what He has said by His Bible, the Word of God. What the Spirit says will never depart from the witness of the Scripture.

God is patient with us, calling, guiding. But at a certain point God will go beyond the warning voice. The King James say He scourges His children. This is not pleasant. God told the Corinthian Christians who had wandered far from Him and into a cesspool of sin and selfishness:

1 Corinthians 11:27-32 (KJV)  Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.  [28]  But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.  [29]  For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.  [30]  For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.  [31]  For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.  [32]  But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

The Apostle Paul told the Corinthians “for THIS CAUSE many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep”. Sickness and disease are often ways that God addresses the disobedient child.

When Israel left Egypt, God drowned the unbelieving Egyptian army in the Red Sea.
When Israel left God, God caused them to wander 40 years until the disobedient died.

Now don’t get me wrong – not every sickness is a paddling from God, but every trial is used by God to make us more His Children. The Bible says:

1 Peter 1:3-7 (KJV)3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

James 1:2-3 (ESV) Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

Not all trials are paddlings from God, but all trials do shape us

  • If we belong to Jesus trials cause us to look upward to Jesus when suffer.

  • Trials prove our faith as to whether it is genuine or counterfeit.

  • Trials show where our love lies. Job said in the midst of terrible trial, (Job 13:15 NASB) “Though He slay me, I will hope in Him…”

  • Trials show us that salvation is more than just receiving Heaven. God saves us to bring Heaven to us, not just to bring us to Heaven.

Hebrews 12:9-10 (KJV) Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

Trials bring the holiness of God to us. If we are His children, we are to be holy as He is holy. The Lord says:

1 Peter 1:13-16 (KJV) Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of {living}; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

God demands that His Children be His Children. So trials come to paddle us if necessary. But God uses every trial so that we will learn that we are to be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live. Our Heavenly Father chastens us that we might be partakers or partners in His holiness.

3 God Does Not Chastise Those Who Are NOT His Children.

Hebrews 12:6-8 (KJV) For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

Like a loving Father the Lord disciplines His Children. But those who are not His He does not discipline. No person whips another person’s children. Trials fall on everyone, whether good or evil. But trials that come to the lost are not the correction of the Father. Trials may lead the unbeliever to look up. I remember the case of the Philippian Jailer who thought all his prisoners had escaped in Acts 16. He started to kill himself when the Apostle Paul cried out:

Do yourself no harm – we are all here

This frightened man ran in to Paul and Silas and cried out “What must I do to be saved?” Trials can lead the lost to Christ. If you are tried, hear the word of Christ:

Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV) Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

If you are a Child of God, rest in Him in the midst of trials. Search your hearts. Insure that you are not in sin. If you are, CONFESS that sin before Him. Repent. Turn. If you’re running from God, Jonah, turn before the whale swallows you. And if you are not His … come to Him. Receive Christ as your Lord and Savior today, right now! May God work in your hearts

The Only Begotten Son

maryMatthew 1:1 (KJV) The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Matthew 1:18 (KJV) Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

This is the time of year that we focus on the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. We have begun what the Church calls “Advent”. An “Advent” is the arrival of an event or a person that changes human history in a significant way. We have – in my lifetime – seen ..

The ADVENT of Television
The ADVENT of Computers
The ADVENT of the Internet
The ADVENT of Social Media
The ADVENT of the Smart Phone

Each one of these things – along with their creators – made a significant contribution (for better or for worse) to humanity. But there is one Advent that we recognize every year about this time. That fallen angel Lucifer – also known as Satan (and yes, I believe there is a Satan, for I see his handiwork every day) doesn’t want you to know about this Advent. He attacks this Advent in subtle ways. But Satan cannot overpower the significance of this Advent. It is the Greatest Advent in all of human history.

It is the ADVENT of Jesus Christ.
His ADVENT changed history and humanity forever.
This is what Christmas is about.

1 We See In Matthew Chapter 1 Verses 2-17 A History We Cannot Ignore. When people read the Bible (and few read the Bible anymore – I hope you are one of the few!) they come to passages like we find at the beginning of Matthew. They start reading:

Matthew 1:2-7 (KJV) Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; 3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram; 4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; 5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; 6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; 7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;

They get about this far and think “What in the world? Begat? This is boring!” So they skip forward, but in so doing miss something very important.

  • Why did Matthew go through such a boring list of names?

  • And what does “Begat” mean?

The word “Begat” (the Greek γεννάω gennaō) is used 39 times in this text. The word means “to be fathered by or to be born of”. This is an unbroken genealogy which starts with Abraham and ends at Joseph, the earthly Stepfather of Christ. This list of names is important because it established the legal, Jewish right of Jesus Christ to be the King of the Jews, the Promised Messiah. There are TWO ROOTS to this Family Tree. Those roots are found in verse 1:

Matthew 1:1 (KJV) The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

a Abraham Is A Root Because God Made A Promise To Abraham. When God met Abraham (this is recorded in the very first Book of the Bible) the Lord promised him:

Genesis 12:1-3 (ESV) “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

God promised Abraham – a childless old man – that He would “make of you a great nation”. This meant that Abraham, a man who could NOT naturally have children would SUPERNATURALLY be given a child.

His wife Sarah – well past child bearing years – would have a child, and that child would have children that would develop into “a great nation”. But this wasn’t all of God’s promise. God told Abraham

in you ALL the FAMILIES of the earth shall be blessed”

God promised Abraham “there will be an ADVENT through you that will impact human history”. God promised Abraham that something WORLD CHANGING would happen through Abraham. God said later in

Genesis 18:18 (ESV) … Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

The Messiah – the Savior of the world – would come through Abraham. Many have come and claimed to be Messiah’s or Saviors. There have been Mohammeds, Buddhas, Hubbards, Smiths, Russels, gods and goddesses that people have followed after. But God promised the Messiah, the One and only Savior of the world would come to us through the Lineage of Abraham, And God keeps His promises. God repeated this promise in:

Genesis 22:18 (ESV).. and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.

God is “not slack in His promises”. Though this genealogy in Matthew 1 focuses on God’s promise to the Jews, it also fulfills God’s promise to the Gentiles. The Apostle Paul declared:

Galatians 3:6-9 (KJV) …. Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

We have an Amazing God Who keeps His Promises. The Messiah would come, and His lineage could be traced through Abraham. But this is not the only Root of this blessed Tree:

b David Is A root Because God Made A Promise To The Shepherd King David.

Matthew 1:1 (KJV) The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

The Messiah would not just be descendant from Abraham, but He MUST be Descendant from the Shepherd King David. I often wondered why, of all the people on the face of the earth, why it was

to shepherds who were watching their sheep by night (Luke 2:8-14)

that the Angel of the Lord went to first on the night that Jesus came into the world. When

the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14)

wasn’t there anybody else outside at night that needed that good news? I suspect that the reason God told the shepherds first is because these people were doing the lowest and the least job. I can imagine them gathering around a campfire, cold and lonely, talking among themselves how one of their own was chosen by God to be King of Israel. Oh what a rags to riches story that would be! It would be like working in a hot sweaty factory and one of those who suffered with you was suddenly promoted to President of that Company! What a great story that would be! The David that Jesus came from is King David, the King who was Shepherd, a lowly Shepherd, until God called him. God promised David:

2 Samuel 7:8-13 (ESV) … ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 12 … I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

The Messiah had to come from the line of David, of the house of Judah. The Messiah would be legally entitled to be King of Israel serving on an eternal Throne. The Messiah – also called “Shiloh” (Hebrew שִׁילֹה Shiyloh)

Genesis 49:10 (NASB) “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

“Shiloh” means “He Whose It Is”. The throne of Judah, the throne of David would be occupied by mere mortals until “He Whose it is” would come. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the King of Israel, the Savior of the world was, is, and always will be Jesus Christ. Others are faint shadows of “He Whose it is”. Jesus Christ is the Promised Messiah. He comes from both Abraham and David, and is the fulfillment of God’s Promise!

2 God’s Promise Is Always Fulfilled, Regardless As To What Man May Do. When a school bus crashed the other week and six children were killed because of human carelessness I had people ask me:

Was this God’s intent?
Did He want those children killed?
Is God really in control?

When horrible things happen we are tempted to think that God lost control of the steering wheel. But God never loses control, even when people make bad decisions.

When things happen that we don’t understand God tells us:

Psalm 46:10 (ESV) “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

Romans 8:28 (ESV) And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.

At the end of this genealogy we read:

Matthew 1:17 (KJV)17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

Do you see what this text is telling you? Here is a bunch of names – many of which we do not know literally from Adam – but God had a plan. Read the text again:

All the generations from Abraham to David ARE FOURTEEN GENERATIONS

and from David until the carrying away in Babylon are FOURTEEN GENERATIONS

and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are FOURTEEN GENERATIONS

This is not just some random list of names. This list is precise. It goes from fourteen to fourteen to fourteen. God is specifically in control. Every name on this list is there because God allowed it to be on the list.

Are these perfect people?
Are you kidding me?

a Consider The Life Of Isaac, The Promised Child. Abraham had this child by Sarah he was a hundred years old.

Surely this Child would be phenomenal. He was.
He was a phenomenal milksop.

He let people walk all over him. When others challenged his right to his father’s wells, Isaac just moved away and let them have them. God affirms His Covenant with Isaac in

Genesis 26:4 (ESV) I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,

and yet just two verses later we read:

Genesis 26:6-7 (ESV) .. Isaac settled in Gerar. 7 When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,” because she was attractive in appearance.

The man would not even protect his wife. Isaac was a poor parent, and he ignored the directives and prophecies of God. This led to his son Jacob to deceive his older brother Esau in order to get the blessing of his father. God would keep His promise in spite of Isaac’s shortcomings.

b Consider The Life Of Jacob, Isaac’s Younger Son. Jacob is a con man. He cons his father Isaac into blessing him instead of his older brother. But God told the mother of these two children Rebekah:

Genesis 25:23 (ESV) And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”

It was God’s intent that Jacob be the one whom the lineage of Christ would go through. Yet did God ask Jacob and his mother to deceive? No. God does not appreciate lying. The Bible tells us that there will be no liars in Heaven (Revelation 21:8). God says:

Proverbs 12:22 (ESV) Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.

God does not condone sin – but Jacob was going to be the one through Whom Messiah would come. If Rebekah and Isaac had honored God’s will then it would have happened righteously. Nonetheless, God is in control.

c Consider The Lives Of Judah And Thamar (verse 3). Jacob had twelve children, but only Judah (the KJV translators here use Judas) was to rule over these twelve. Judah was to be the Tribe of Israel where the Ruler or King came. Tamar’s husband died, and the third son of Judah was supposed to marry her. He refused to do so, so Tamar committed incest with Judah (you can read about this in Genesis 38). God does not condone sexual sin, but condemns it, but

God does not condemn the innocent Child who had nothing to do with that union.

I have heard people justify abortion in the event of rape – but why penalize the child because of the evil of the parent? All life matters. All life is valuable. All are made in the image of God!

Matthew 1:3 (KJV)3 And Judas (Judah) begat Phares (Perez) and Zara (Zerah) of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

d Consider The Lives Of Perez and Zerah (see Genesis 38:27-29) who were twins. In the case of twins the firstborn was the one who came from the womb first. Zerah stuck his hand out first and the midwife tied a scarlet thread on his hand, but then Perez was born first.

The scarlet thread of the midwife was on Zerah,
but the Scarlet Thread of the Messiah was on Perez
God is in control, no matter what man might do

e Consider These Imperfect People And How God Used Them. I’d love to go through all of these names today, but time just doesn’t permit it. But I do want to look at just a few more names in this list of forty two men and four women.

Matthew 1:5-6 (KJV) And Salmon begat Booz (Boaz) of Rachab (Rahab); and Booz (Boaz) begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; 6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias (Uriah);

Salmon begat (fathered) Boaz of Rahab

Rahab was a prostitute, a woman who sold herself to others. When Israel was going to go into the Promised Land Rahab hid the spies in Jericho (see Joshua 2:1ff). Rahab believed on the God of Israel, the same God Who loves us. Rahab was saved by Grace. The Old Testament doesn’t tell us all the details, but in the New Testament we see an ex-prostitute in the lineage of the Messiah.

God saves whosoever will.
God has a purpose for whosoever will.
God loves whosoever will.
God changes whosoever will come unto Him in faith.
Boaz begat (fathered) Obed of Ruth

Ruth was descended from the Moabite people, a hated people. The Moabites originated from Lot committing incest with his eldest daughter (see Genesis 19:32-27). The Moabites tried to stop Israel from going into Canaan (see Exodus 15:15), and became one of the most hated enemies of Israel. She was a Gentile, despised, but God loved her. God loves everyone. The Apostle Peter said:

Acts 10:34-35 (ESV) “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.

God does not look at your color.
God does not look at your past.
God does not care where you came from,
Nor does He care what you think you’re worth.
God loves you, and calls you to His side.
He calls you through the Messiah, Jesus Christ our Lord!

and God will forgive. He does not condone sin, but He does forgive.

Even David Himself failed.

David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias (Uriah)

David took another man’s wife, then had that man named Uriah killed. God does not condone murder. God does not condone adultery. Yet God does not punish the innocent Solomon for his parents sins. The lineage of the Messiah continued through flawed people,

Begating and begating

But I want you to notice something interesting.

3 Joseph Did Not “Begat” Jesus. The lineage of the Messiah is traced from Abraham, through David, and up to Joseph, where we read:

Matthew 1:16 (KJV) And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

The text doesn’t follow the pattern of …

Joseph begat Jesus of Mary

It doesn’t say that. The birth of Jesus is not tied to Joseph, but to Mary. The Bible goes on to say:

Matthew 1:18 (KJV) Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, BEFORE THEY CAME TOGETHER, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Mary and Joseph were engaged to be married. Before they came together sexually, before they “slept with one another” as people so flippantly say,

She was found with Child OF THE HOLY GHOST (Spirit)

Christ was supernaturally born. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Bible says that the sign of the Messiah, the Savior is that He would be born of a virgin

Isaiah 7:14 (KJV) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew 1:22-23 (KJV)22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

God would enter humanity. Every birth is a miracle, but Christ’s Advent is a double miracle. He was born of a virgin. He was born of God. God became man, not through perfect man, but the perfect came through the imperfect because God is always in control.

It is this same God that calls you to salvation.

God sent His Son into this world to be our Messiah. Jesus Christ was and is without sin,

Hebrews 7:26 (ESV) …. holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

Jesus came to this earth to pay for our sins, and to call whosoever will, whosoever broken, whosoever will believe in Him to salvation. Jesus Christ is the Greatest Gift you can receive this Christmas. Receive Him. Believe Him. Follow Him, to the glory of God in the highest!

May God lead a lost soul to Himself through His Word and Spirit!
